This test kit measures your folic acid & folate levels

Folic acid

Folic acid refers to the synthetic form of Vitamin B9 found in vitamin supplements and fortified foods.

Folic acid can be converted into Vitamin B9 in our body, but the conversion and absorption is not as efficient as folate.

An excessive intake of folic acid (more than 400 μg/day) can lead to elevated levels of unmetabolized folic acid in the bloodstream that has been linked to the development of cancer.

However, moderate folic acid consumption has been proven to help increase folate levels in the body, therefore decreasing the risk of developing folate deficiency diseases such as Neural Tube Defects in infants and Folate-Deficiency Anemia.

Folate

Folate refers to the naturally occurring form of Vitamin B9 found. Folate is crucial in synthesizing DNA and promoting cell division.

Maintaining an appropriate folate level at around 400 μg/day is necessary to promote health.

Folate deficiency can lead to various clinical conditions and diseases, namely Folate-Deficiency Anemia and Neural Tube Defects in newborn babies among other things.

A good folate level is important for good cognitive functions throughout life. Low levels of folate have been recently linked with higher chances of stroke and heart diseases. Folate deficiency can be avoided by consuming food with high folate levels (dark green leafy vegetables, beans, poultry, and citrus fruits) or folic acid supplements.

Folate is a key component for red blood cell formation and cell growth & function. It can be naturally found in dark-green vegetables, peas, beans, nuts and some fruits.

Why do we need to know our folic acid | folate levels?

Managing folate at a normal level in the body is important to mitigate many health risks such as:

Because of its importance, the United States FDA implemented mandatory folic acid fortification in cereal grain products (e.g., cereal, bread, pastas, rice, and flour) in 1998.

CDC 2018 studies showed that there was a 41% risk reduction in birth neural tube defects (NTD) subsequent to this mandate.

Folic acid & Folate
level measurement

By monitoring folate and folic acid level in saliva. Lack of folate/folic acid increases the chase of getting a stroke. However, studies have shown excess folate/folic acid causes cancer.

It is therefore important to maintain folate/folic acid level in our body at a moderate level. Our test is an easy way to self-test your folate | folic acid levels.
